Moje: A Throwback to Simpler Times - NOW! Jakarta Magazine

Text and photos by Kindra Cooper

Home décor store Moje is a breath of fresh air in a market presided over by minimalism’s straight angles. The fledgling brand tries adifferent tangent with a style that celebrates artistic flaw. The use of pinewood and unfinished surfaces endows the pieces with a ‘broken-in’ feel, as ifthey had a past life in a farmhouse in Kansas. The store itself is unpretentiously redolent of a European log cabin, and inside, the scent of wood shavings perfumes the air, for Moje skirts the use of harsh varnishes. Owner Theresa and her husband are the vision behind the brand, deriving inspiration from classics and old movies the likes of Laura Ingalls’ Houseon the Prairie, where lace curtains and handmade wooden furniture carved and assembled with love used to be a household fixture. The long-handled tin ‘Cookie’ and ‘Cracker’ canisters are painted using a faded effect, and there’s even a tin milk pail labeled with ‘Jersey Crown Dairy Cultured Buttermilk’. Woven baskets and artificial flowers are aplenty, as well as wooden knickknacks and Christianity-inspired statuettes. The wooden bread box has a hinged lid and a meshed window to air freshly-baked bread, while the ‘tea’, ‘coffee’ and ‘sugar’ box hearkens also to an era before the advent of airtight containers. Threadbare rugs and checkered tablecloths further add to the farmhouse feel, made warm by the inpouring of sunlight from the shuttered windows. Visit the Moje outlet to glean inspiration for imbuing your home with that laidback countryside nuance. You’ll be surprised to find how well Moje’s throwback pieces assimilate with your contemporary décor.
